How do I work out pixels for a print?

Multiply each side in inches by the DPI. An 8 × 10 print at 300 DPI needs 2400 × 3000 pixels.

What DPI should I use?

300 for photos viewed up close, 240 for inkjet prints on a wall, 150 for posters seen from a metre or more.
