Format notes

  • JPG: Lossy format used by almost every camera and phone. Upscaling also cleans some compression blocks.
  • PNG: Lossless and supports transparency, so the alpha channel is kept through the upscale.
  • WEBP: Google format common on websites. Often smaller than JPG at the same quality.
  • HEIC: Default iPhone photo format. Decoded on your device before upscaling, 10-bit files need an 8-bit copy first.
  • AVIF: Newer web format with strong compression. Supported for input in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.
  • GIF: Only the first frame is upscaled. Animated GIFs come out as a still image.
  • BMP: Uncompressed Windows bitmap. Large files, so PNG output is usually the better choice.
