Upscale images for product photos

Supplier photos are often 800 pixels, too small for marketplace zoom. For online shops, the Photo model at 2× is the starting point. 2× is free (5 images a day) and runs on your device, so nothing uploads.

Tips

  • 2× gets an 800-pixel image to 1600, past the usual 1000-pixel zoom threshold.
  • Batch the whole catalogue with one settings pass.
  • Compress the results afterwards for fast page loads.

Worked example

The target for product photos is 2,000 × 2,000 pixels. This table shows the smallest scale that reaches it from three common source sizes, and what 2× gives each one. 4× is the largest scale, so a target slightly beyond it is finished with the resize tool, up to 5× in total.

Questions

What scale should I use for product photos?

Work back from the target of 2,000 × 2,000: divide it by your image size and round up to 2× or 4×. If 4× is a little short, finish with the resize tool; past 5× in total, start from a bigger original. For most online shops, 2× is the usual answer.
